How much of your extra income do you actually keep?

Overtime, a pay rise, a bonus, a second job or a side business: part of any extra money goes to tax. Pick the type, enter your usual yearly income and the extra amount, and see how much ends up in your pocket.

1. What kind of extra income?

Your pay for the year, including leave, minus salary packaging and work deductions. Not sure? Use your yearly pay before tax.

$120,000
4. Tick any that apply

From $1,000 of overtime, you keep

$670
Income tax $300, Medicare levy $20

What this quick calculator includes

2026–27 tax rates for Australian residents, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy, the Medicare levy surcharge for singles, and compulsory HELP repayments.

What it leaves out

Salary packaging and fringe benefits, family and couple thresholds, rental or investment income, and the Medicare exemption for work visa holders. The TaxAhead app includes all of these, worked out from your own payslips.

Illustration only. Your own result depends on your situation. Not tax advice.

Made for people whose pay changes every fortnight

If your income moves with nights, weekends, overtime or a second job, the tax taken out each pay is a guess. TaxAhead keeps a running total so the guess doesn't become a surprise.

  • Nurses and midwives
  • Doctors

  • Paramedics and police
  • Trades and construction
  • Engineers and IT

Everything that changes your tax, in one place

Start with one payslip and add the rest as the year goes.

Reads your payslips
Upload a PDF and TaxAhead picks up the employer, pay date, gross, tax, super and year-to-date figures.
Projects to 30 June
Your usual mix of overtime and penalty rates is carried forward, so the estimate follows how you actually get paid.
Threshold warnings
See when the next pay rise or extra shift tips you into a higher HELP rate or the Medicare levy surcharge.
More than one job
Two employers, an agency or a casual shift. TaxAhead flags when the tax-free threshold is claimed twice.
Rental and business income
Record rent, property costs and sole-trader income, including PAYG instalments, by ATO category.
Medicare, surcharge and visa exemptions
Covers the Medicare levy, the surcharge for people without hospital cover, and the exemption many skilled migrants on work visas can claim.
Deductions with receipts
Log work expenses as you pay them, with the receipt attached and the work-use share worked out.
A myTax-ready summary
At the end of the year, download a PDF laid out in the order myTax asks for it, ready for lodging yourself.

Questions

Is TaxAhead tax advice?

No. TaxAhead gives general information and estimates based on the figures you enter and current Australian tax rates. It doesn't tell you what to claim. For advice about your situation, speak with a registered tax agent.

Do I need to connect my bank account?

No. TaxAhead works from your payslips, plus anything you choose to add such as receipts or rental statements.

Can TaxAhead lodge my tax return?

No. You lodge yourself in myTax, or through a registered tax agent. TaxAhead's summary lays your figures out in the order myTax asks for them.

I've moved to Australia on a work visa. Does it work for me?

Yes, if you're an Australian resident for tax purposes, as most people on skilled work visas are. Many work visa holders aren't entitled to Medicare, and TaxAhead can include the Medicare levy exemption if you have a Medicare Entitlement Statement. Working holiday makers and non-residents are taxed differently and aren't covered yet.

What will the AI assistant do?

It will answer questions about your own figures in plain English, like "why has my estimate changed?" or "what happens if I pick up two extra shifts?". It explains your numbers. It won't tell you what to claim, and it isn't tax advice.

When can I start?

Now. TaxAhead is free for a short beta period. Create an account, upload a payslip, and tell us what you think at hello@taxahead.com.au.

Will it stay free?

It's free for a short beta period. After that we'll offer a paid plan to cover running costs. We'll email you at least 30 days before, beta users will get a founding member discount, and nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe.
